ProCitius Research and Strand Genomics forge medicinal chemistry services partnership

Indian chemistry services leader ProCitius Research (a division of the USD 250 million Sanmar Group), and Strand Genomics, a pioneer in the development of novel computational solutions to drug design announced a first of its kind partnership to provide integrated drug design and library synthesis solutions to support drug discovery at pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.

Under the terms of the agreement, ProCitius Research and Strand Genomics will integrate their service capabilities to provide a comprehensive and one-stop discovery solution spanning customized and target-directed design, selection, synthesis and delivery of novel chemical entities for evaluation by pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.

This integrated service offering will remove one of the major hurdles in drug discovery– the need to cost-effectively, rapidly and iteratively evaluate and optimize computationally directed chemical libraries.

Commenting on the agreement, Dr R Sankara Subramanian, Vice President, ProCitius Research said – “we believe that Strand Genomics offers a unique platform of computational solutions for drug discovery, and by partnering with them to design and deliver custom libraries, we will enable our customers to access their technology in a cost-effective manner”.

Dr Kas Subramanian, CSO, Strand Genomics, said – “ProCitius has established itself as a chemistry services partner for discovery organizations and their capabilities in parallel synthesis and analytical chemistry will be key to building novel chemical libraries”.

Training program for young chemists at ProCitius

The month of November saw the launch of a training program for young chemists at ProCitius. The course titled "A Practical Course in Synthetic Organic Chemistry", is designed and delivered by inhouse PhD faculty keeping in mind relevance to the practical challenges chemists at ProCitius face in the laboratory during their day to day work. The overarching principle is to deliver training that reinforces and extends the academic MSc curriculum to an industrial laboratory context. Twelve students were chosen from among the most recent recruits to attend the course of 19 one hour lectures over an 8 week period. The course is designed to promote classroom discussion and interaction, as well as study outside the classroom. Both students and faculty will be evaluated for their learning and performance in the course.

Commenting on the experience, Dr Swaminathan Subramaniam, Chief Executive, who has also donned the mantle of course director said: "This is the first time we are attempting this and it is a gratifying experience, so far. We have a pool of internationally trained PhD scientists on our staff and their experience and knowledge is being leveraged by imparting training to these young and eager chemists. Everyone, including the faculty, benefit from this interaction and a culture of learning and innovation is promoted, as a result." Dr Hemant Joshi, the Faculty Coordinator, spoke on behalf of the other faculty members when he said that - "the youngsters are very bright and are not afraid to challenge the faculty. This keeps everyone on their toes." The students were also uniformly appreciative of the opportunity to learn and grow, even while they worked full-time.

Emphasizing safety at ProCitius Research

Safety is a high priority at ProCitius and efforts are on to ensure that the research centre is a safe place of work for its employees. As a part of these efforts, on November 23, 2004 a special Safety Training Programme for ProCitius scientists was held by trainers from Merck Limited (India). Dr Varghese George led an interactive training session designed by Dr Martin Muller, keeping in mind the needs of corporate research centres. The training included a half hour video that illustrated accident prevention methods in the laboratory.

Commenting on the session, Mr Arunabha Raychaudhuri, Head of the Safety Committee at the research centre, emphasized the importance of frequent and repetitive training to ensure that safety becomes a habit for the researchers in the laboratory.

ProCitius opens new laboratory module

The 5th laboratory module with 24 fume hoods came on stream at the research center of ProCitius Research on October 21st. This module is configured to support Chemistry at a range of scales from mg to kg. The fumehoods (bench, low-level and walk-in types) have been supplied by Kewaunee Corporation, USA. Elephant trunks placed strategically ensure evacuation of solvent vapours and safety of personnel. An adjoining office suite (with isolated ventilation) accomodates scientists when they are not at the bench. The laboratory is self-sufficient, with adjoining spaces for a small volume chemical store and a glass-ware wash facility. Inaugurating the facility Dr Sankara Subramaniam expressed his satisfaction at the speed of execution in the creation of the laboratory. He also said that "this laboratory signals our intent to expand our capacities to meet growing client needs, as well as our commitment to building facilities which have world-class safety and infrastructure".

With the addition of this facility ProCitius Research now has 76 fume-hoods in operation.

ProCitius booth a big hit at IBC meet

ProCitius Research was represented by Drs Hemant Joshi, Biswajit Roy (Bangalore Genei), Sankara Subramanian and Swaminathan Subramaniam at the recently held Manufacturing and Outsoucing meet in Mumbai.

The conference was extremely well-attended with an excellent scientific programme. The strategically located ProCitius booth was a beehive of activity and meetings for the 2 days of exhibitions. Dr Sankara Subramanian stated that "the programme and meetings exceeded our expectations. We not only had an opportunity to meet with our existing customers, but we also had inquiries from a large number of pharma and biotech companies who were in attendance." Dr Swaminathan Subramaniam added that "the conference was an excellent opportunity to launch the new brand for Sanmar's Research services business and to create a common communication platform for the Chemistry and Biology services of Sanmar. Dr Roy fielded a number of queries for our Biology services which we believe adds a unique dimension to the portfolio of our service capabilities."
